7 Day Sample Itinerary

Belize: Placencia/Laughing Bird Caye/Little Water Cay/Pelican Cayes

Placencia to Laughing Bird Caye

What a way to start! Enjoy a spectacular 1½-2 hour sail to the island of Laughing Bird Caye. From your anchorage at Laughing Bird, dinghy ashore to enjoy some of the most beautiful white beaches you've ever seen. If you're a snorkeling fan, you'll find plenty of eye-opening sights below the crystal blue waters.

Laughing Bird Caye to Lime Caye

It just keeps getting better! Day 2 brings a smooth broad reach southward en route to Lime Caye. On the way, you may wish to stop at Seal Caye for a leisurely swim and snorkel. Then, it's back on to Lime Caye, described as "everybody's idea of what a South Pacific island should look like." Dinghy around the shallow lagoon that's home to a vibrant reef perfect for snorkeling.

Lime Caye to Hunting Caye

Take a quick detour down to Sapodilla Caye for a lunch stop and fantastic snorkeling. Experts regard the diving in the Sapodilla Caye as some of the best in Belize. Once you have finished your exploration, (tearing yourself away will be difficult) sail up to Hunting Caye. With its thick coconut forest, and pristine beaches, this island wins hands down as the gem of the Sapodillas. Hunting Caye is also an important nesting site for the Hawksbill turtle. Ashore you will find some fishing huts and a manned lighthouse station.

Hunting Caye to Little Water Caye

Leave Hunting Caye and sail northward to Tom Owen's Caye for a mid-morning stop. A delightful anchorage awaits you between two deserted isles; the western Caye has a cluster of tall palms. After a swim, sail northward to the tranquil Ranguana Caye for a casual lunch onboard. Continue on to Little Water Caye for a beautiful night's anchorage. This palm covered paradise is renowned for its fishing. So if you like, throw out a line before dinnertime!

Little Water Caye to North Long Cocoa Caye

Another day in paradise! From Little Water Caye, sail over to the beautiful Queen Caye, where breathtaking white beaches and crystal clear waters await. Don't pass up the opportunity for another great day of snorkeling on the reef of North Queens Caye. Afterwards, take a quick sail north to Buttonwood Caye, a fish camp where you can buy the catch of the day. Mmmm, break out the grill! The day's last sail will take you to North Long Cocoa Caye, where you'll find more great snorkeling. It's also fun to watch the fly fishermen casting for bonefish on the flats. Or better yet, join them!

North Long Cocoa Caye to South Water Caye

Set off to the tiny caye of Wee Wee. Funny name, but a beautiful place with towering mangroves which make a nice backdrop for lunch on deck. After lunch, sail over to South Water Caye. Not only will you find great snorkeling and beaches, you'll also find spots for dinner and drinks. By the way, there's also a great dive resort here worth checking out.

South Water Caye to Pelican Cayes

Start by exploring the Tobacco Range, a great place for fly fishing, and the Twin Cayes where, with a little luck, you'll spot a slow-moving manatee or two. Later on, sail south to the Blue Ground range for a swim in the calm waters, and then anchor overnight in the very sheltered Pelican Cayes. This place is great to explore in a dinghy. It's also a great time to kayak.

final morning on day
Pelican Caye to Placencia

There is one last enjoyable broad reach remaining. The good news is that the sail back to the base is filled with just as many beautiful sights as you enjoyed heading out on day 1. Arrive at the Moorings base in time for a noon check-out.
